2) ORDINANCE AMENDMENT-CHAPTER 25, SECTION 25-4

When people think of domestic pigs, they often envision large animals weighing between 310 to 700 pounds.
The term "mini pig" generally refers to a breed of pig weighing under 150 pounds. These pigs are distinct from their larger counterparts in size, behavior, and care requirements, making them suitable for domestic life.
Chesapeake, Virginia, provides a clear example of how mini pigs can be accommodated in residential areas through specific ordinances. Similarly, other cities such as San Diego, Seattle, Austin, Portland, Fort Worth, and Boulder have enacted ordinances that allow mini pigs under specific conditions.
Mini pigs can be trained, demonstrating their high level of intelligence and adaptability.
Addressing potential concerns about noise and behavior, mini pigs are generally quiet animals. Nor are they aggressive and attack as other pets do when they escape or are off leash.
A common counterargument is, "If we allow mini pigs, where does it end?" However, clear guidelines and restrictions can be set to ensure only suitable animals are permitted, preventing a slippery slope. Another issue is there are no facts about why to not keep mini-pigs as pets. We are presenting facts: mini pigs are already successfully integrated into many urban areas, demonstrating their viability as pets. Opponents have not provided fact-based, logical arguments against mini pigs, relying instead on feelings and misconceptions.
Please vote in favor of allowing pet pigs.

Please vote in favor of both ordinance amendments regarding the keeping of mini pigs in residentially-zoned districts as household pets.
If shelters are a concern, The Humane Society main website page has a section dedicated to “pet-inclusive housing” as the very means to support community stake-holders, shelters, and rescues! The entire purpose of this ordinance is to help keep pets in the loving homes they already have—mini pigs would be better cared for with the proper laws in place.
“If we open the door for this, what’s next? It'll be companion horses. Where does it end?” We are not asking for miniature pigs to be classified as “Companion Animals.” The comparison to livestock that are not specifically bred as household pets is outside the issue.
In no way do mini pigs devalue or disturb the neighborhood. They are quiet, non-destructive, and safe animals to keep as household pets (see previous reference to cities that allow mini pigs and reasons for this inclusion.)
I am deeply concerned that members of the Planning Commission disregard constituents with well-stated research and made decisions based on personal opinion without opportunity for open discussion. Please consider the Humane Society, Brooke Hill Farm—miniature pig rescue and sanctuary in Fredericksburg, American Mini Pig Rescue Advocates (or listen to your constituents who work in this field) for more information on the importance of this ordinance. Thank you so much for your time and assistance in this matter.
